   Drab6 Fishing Charters - Steelhead

Steelhead season in the Lower Niagara River is open all year round. Although prime time is from December through March. With a daily limit of 3 fish and a minimum length of 21 inches. You may posses a 2 day limit (bag limit) for transportation. The Average size for Steelhead is six to eight lbs. But I can’t tell you how many 12 pound chrome leapers I’ve boated over the years. This Lower Niagara River fishing charter leaves from the very scenic Lewiston Landing boat launch in Lewiston, New York Where the Public Works Department keeps the launch ramp open, no matter what conditions may be encountered for a western NY winter. This is winter in Niagara. First and foremost, you have to be dressed for the part. Layers of clothes are the way to go; keeping that warmth in as much as possible. There are days you can be overdressed, so being able to take some clothes off can be just as important. Remember that the water flowing down through is pegged at 32 degrees-when your catching fish, it just doesn’t seem to be that cold. On this trip, we are never more than a few minutes from the launch, so a time-out to go in and warm up is not a problem. When winter Steelhead season sets in the Lake Ontario region, Hardcore anglers brave the elements for the chance to tangle with a hard charging steelhead. We drift fish 3-way rigs for these chrome leapers with egg sacks, live emerald shiners and another weapon of choice is the K-9 Kwikfish. It’s erratic movement entice fish to strike and come in array of colors. Rich in oxygen, the Niagara River receives a healthy dose of trout stockings from the States Department of Environmental Conservation. In 2009 alone, the river was the recipient of over 47,000 steelhead which I personally helped release as a board member with the Niagara River Anglers association. This fishing charter features the 12 mile stretch of the Niagara River between Devil's Hole and the Niagara Bar. For anglers looking to catch open water trout in the winter months, it just doesn’t get any better than this. Because of the tumultuous current that rips through the gorge area, this water doesn’t freeze up, giving boaters access to some of the best fishing in the country.  If winter is just a bit too cold for you, many of these trout will remain in the river into the early part of June. It is not unusual to have a mixed bag of species on this Lower Niagara River fishing charter. Lake trout and Brown Trout often accompany the Steelhead. LETS GO FISHIN!!!!
