Drab6 Fishing Charters - Smallmouth Bass
The finest smallmouth
bass fishing in New York State and arguably the entire United States can
be found in the water of Lake Erie. Smallmouth bass are one reason that
so many fishermen come to the Greater Niagara Region each year and are
the most frequently caught fish species in Lake Erie. Both Lakes Erie
and Ontario hold huge numbers of bass, and they grow to trophy size too.
Lake Erie bass season opens a full six weeks before the rest of the
state. From the first Saturday in May through Friday before the
third Saturday in June this special season allows you to keep one trophy
sized smallie over 20 inches Then our regular Bass season opens and the
daily limit is five with a 12 inch minimum length. Our Lake Erie fishing charter leaves from the NFTA Small Boat Harbor in Buffalo New York.
There is parking directly adjacent to the boat launch, so all you need
to do is step out of your vehicle and onto the awaiting boat. These big
waters are second to none for smallmouth. May through June, this is the place to be! The
best smallmouth bass fishing of the entire year is in the spring. After
ice-out, smallmouth bass begin to seek out areas where water warms up
faster than the open lake, seeking areas for spawning. Some of the
largest bass are caught in the spring; anglers have a better chance of
catching a 6 pound plus trophy in spring than any other time of year.
The last five New York State record smallmouths have come from Lake
Erie, with the current record standing at an impressive 8 pounds, 4
ounces. As Lake Erie water warms, post-spawn smallmouths move to deeper
water zones where they will hold during the summer months (late June
through August) . Most bass caught are between 2 and 4 pounds, but there
is good opportunity to catch a hefty 5 or 6 pound bronzeback. The bass
bite is usually best between 20 and 40 feet of water over bottom
structure such as drop-offs and ledges of shoals and reefs. The
drop-shot rig has become very popular among Erie bass anglers as an
effective way to fish bait just above the bottom, also the 3-way rig
drifted over these areas with live bait is another technique used with
great success. As far as artificial bait goes “Tubes” can be used
effectively through cast and retrieve or vertical jigging. Our Lower Niagara River fishing charter leaves from the very scenic Lewiston Landing in Lewiston New York,
which over looks the Niagara Gorge. From here we have access to the
lower Niagara river and the “Niagara Bar” which is located at the mouth
of the Niagara River as it enters Lake Ontario. This area holds great
numbers of smallmouth and are fished with the same methods as Erie. Both
these Smallmouth Bass charters are great family outings. These trips
keep the kids occupied with lots of action. LETS GO FISHIN!!!!Capt. Steve (716) 807-6248
